Afternoon: U.S. stocks mixed on telecoms fell

U.S. stocks ended mixed on Thursday afternoon. The dollar rose. MetroPCS Communications shares fell, along with decline in the telecommunications sector.

EST at 12:56 on January 6 (Beijing at 01:56 on January 7), the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 33.37 points to 11,689.52 points, down 0.28%; the Nasdaq composite index rose 5.21 points to 2,707.41 points, or 0.19%; Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 3.27 points to 1,273.29 points, down 0.26%.

By pre-paid wireless service provider MetroPCS Communications (PCS) fell 6.6% impact of the telecommunications sector generally fell on Thursday. The company announced fourth-quarter growth rate of subscribers slowed down relative to the same period last year. Other telecoms also fell, including AT & T (T) fell 3.5%, Verizon Communications (VZ) fell 3.9%.

Retail sector also declined, because many retailers, announced that December same-store sales below expectations.

Institutional investors, chief market strategist at SCM Advisors Max - Bob Ritz (Max Bublitz), said, "I do not know that more retailers that situation, or that the market expectations." He said a large number of recently released economic data better than expected, so that people become too optimistic about the prospects for consumer spending.

Bob Ritz said, "may have been expected to start higher than the actual condition."
